Your requirements to a dust collection system

What do you expect from a dust collector, i.e. an extraction and filtration system for dust and particles? It must meet various requirements to ensure low maintenance, health protection, and high quality of work. These systems are designed to efficiently remove dust and fumes from the air, making them a vital component in maintaining workplace safety and air quality.

This includes:

  • Complete dust removal: The entire system is geared towards the complete elimination of all dust that occurs by means of workplace extraction. Whether it's plastics or metal dust, sanding dust, or more hazardous types like combustible dust or potentially explosive dust, our industrial dust collection systems are robust and sophisticated enough to handle various types of particulates, ensuring a clean and safe environment.

  • Gradual filtering: Use of pre-filters for coarse particles (>10 µm) is standard to prevent the fine dust filter (<10 µm) from saturating too quickly, extending the life of more sensitive components like the cartridge filter. If necessary, adsorption filters can be added to further enhance air purification, capturing even the finest particles from the air stream

  • Adaptation to relevant contaminants: An effective smoke and dust control system must be capable of handling all particles, regardless if they’re coarse or fine. The capacity of the filter media must be adapted to the air flow volume and the amount of dust produced. For instance, when large amounts of coarse dust are generated, high-capacity cartridge dust collectors are used to prevent frequent replacement. In contrast, environments that produce fine dust might benefit from specialized filters designed to capture and remove these fine particles without clogging.

  • Adaptation to workplaces: In large production plants, the size of the dust collector system and its capacity to capture dust at high volumes matter most. However, attributes such as 'space-saving', 'mobile', or 'silent' are crucial in smaller or manual workstations. Our dust collection systems are versatile and can be installed in various industrial settings without disrupting work routines. These systems ensure that the extraction solution does not become a distraction or hinderance, providing effective dust control without noise or inefficiency.

FAQ: Dust Collectors and Dust Extraction Systems

A dust collector (or mobile unit) is typically a compact, portable device designed for direct extraction from one or two machines. In contrast, a dust extraction system is usually a stationary, centralized installation that serves multiple extraction points via a ducting network, designed for high airflow and continuous industrial use.

Efficient extraction is essential wherever dry dust is generated. This primarily includes woodworking, metal processing, the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, and food production. Compliance with Occupational Exposure Limits (OEL) often makes the use of modern dust collectors a legal requirement in these sectors.

ULT supports a multitude of industrial processes in various industries.

The process generally follows these steps:

  1. Capture: Dust-laden air is extracted directly at the point of origin.

  2. Filtration: The air flows through high-performance filters (e.g., cartridge or bag filters).

  3. Cleaning: The filtered air is either returned to the room (recirculation) or vented outside (exhaust).

  4. Discharge: In a storage filter, the collected dust accumulates in the filter element, and in a cartridge filter, it accumulates in a collection container.

Dust collectors are certified based on their filtration efficiency:

  • Class L: Simple dusts (permissibility < 1%).

  • Class M: Wood and metal dusts (permissibility < 0.1%).

  • Class H: Carcinogenic or pathogenic dusts (permissibility < 0.005%).

Yes, for such environments, the equipment must be ATEX-compliant. These specialized dust extraction systems feature explosion protection measures (such as pressure relief vents or flame barriers) to prevent ignition sources or to safely contain the effects of an internal explosion.

This depends on the dust load and the filter type. Modern systems feature automatic filter cleaning (e.g., pulse-jet cleaning), which significantly extends filter life. Replacement is usually indicated by differential pressure monitoring when the filter resistance becomes too high.

Absolutely. By using air recirculation in the winter, the expensive heated hall air remains inside the building. Furthermore, systems with demand-based control (frequency converters) save energy by automatically adjusting power to the number of active extraction points. A well-designed system can save up to 60% on energy costs in the medium term.

Please also check the technical paper on the economic benefit of modern air filtration systems.

The required airflow is the most critical factor for efficiency. It must be calculated to ensure a high enough capture velocity at the source to safely transport even heavy particles into the dust extraction system.

In accordance with industrial safety regulations, extraction systems must be inspected regularly—usually annually—by a qualified person. This inspection covers seals, filter integrity, and the overall effectiveness of the capture hoods.

ULT provides a wide service and maintenance network, partnering with its customers for maximum customer satisfaction.

High-quality dust collectors protect employee health and prevent machine wear caused by abrasive deposits. Additionally, they ensure product quality, reduce cleaning costs, and ensure legal compliance with health and safety executive (HSE) standards and environmental regulations.
